History

Angora was named after Ankara, a city in Turkey. Robert and George Callaghan founded it in 1863 and built the Callaghan textile mill. The area was relatively rural and underdeveloped until around the 1920s. It was during that time that the Callaghan textile mill began being used to produce yarn and glass. With industry came a growth in population along the 5800 block of Baltimore Avenue and Sherwood Forest.

Angora still has plenty of nature along Cobbs Creek with its main residential areas being the communities along the 5800 block of Baltimore Avenue, Angora Terrace and the Sherwood Forest community. With currently redevelopment efforts by the City of Philadelphia, the real estate in Angora is becoming more and more well kept.

Transportation

Angora is serviced by Philadelphia’s SPETA public transportation system. Passengers can access the rest of the city via the Commuter Rail along the Media/Elwyn Line. There are also the 46 and G bus routes along with the trolley line, route 34. Each of these lines intersects at Baltimore Avenue and 58^th Street.
