Philadelphia, in Greek meaning “The City of Brotherly Love”, is not only America’s 5th most populous city but it is also considered to be one of the most affordable. Typical homes in Philadelphia are historic colonial and Federal-style brick row homes.

Even though Philadelphia is known for its historic homes, in recent years, the city has been inviting well-known architects and real estate moguls to refurbish, renovate and construct new, yet affordable, residential spaces with modern conveniences.

Fairmount, also known as the “Art Museum Area”, derives its name from the distinguished hill where the Philadelphia Museum of Art is built.  Because of the hill’s grandeur, William Penn originally planned to build his house upon this hill, but never succeeded.  During the 17th century, European settlers used the land at Fairmount to farm.  During the Revolutionary War, British soldiers built their defenses upon the hill, and continued their line down Fairmount Avenue all the way to the Delaware River.  It wasn’t until 1854 when this district became part of the City of Philadelphia.

During the 19th century, when Philadelphia began expanding, there were several major projects that were introduced to the Fairmount district.  The largest and most notable was the Water Works, which quickly became a tourist attraction for travelers from all over the world.  The Water Works was a project that used waterpower to pump the water from the Schuylkill River into reservoirs at Fairmount hill, where it continued to city homes and businesses.  During its time, it was a huge technological advancement as well as a scenic attraction.  Charles Dickens was known to have listed the Water Works as one of the two things he was interested in visiting during his trip to Philadelphia.

The Fairmount district offers visitors and locals some of Philadelphia’s best attractions including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Water Works, as well as Eastern State Penitentiary, where Al Capone spent time in prison.  Most of the structures in the Fairmount area are prime examples of the Greek Revival architectural movement in the United States.

The Fairmount neighborhood is serviced by SEPTA, Philadelphia’s public transportation system.  Passengers can access numerous parts of the city by catching one of the many bus routes that go through Fairmount.
