History

Media, Pennsylvania is located in Delaware County, 12 miles west of the City of Philadelphia. It was originally called Providence Township after being purchased from William Penn by Peter and William Taylor. The area remained quite rural until it was incorporated as the Borough of Media in 1850. Media is most known for being an important stop along the historical “Underground Railroad”. Slaves escaping the south would seek refuge at a farm, which is now known as the John J. Tyler Arboretum.

The town of Media, Pennsylvania is a very progressive and forward thinking community. In fact, in 2006, Media became the first town in the United States to attain a fair trade certification, something that only towns in Europe had been striving towards. To meet the criteria, Media was to serve fair-trade coffees and teas in government meetings and offices as well as in local restaurants and businesses.

Under the motto “Everybody’s Hometown”, Media was voted to be one of the best places to raise a family by Philadelphia Magazine. Visitors and residents of Media can enjoy a suburban town with an urban flare. In fact, the town still has a running trolley, making getting around town easy and convenient.

Other than having its own public transportation infrastructure, travelers wishing to access the City of Philadelphia and the surrounding areas from Media can take SEPTA. Passengers can take the Regional Rail Line from 305 Media Station Road & South Orange Street.
