History

Quakertown, Pennsylvania is located in Bucks County and lies 29 miles north of Philadelphia. It was originally settled by Quakers but was not known as Quakertown until the first post office opened in 1803. Prior to 1803, Quakertown was known as the settlement of the “Great Swamp”. During the American Revolutionary War, under the command of Colonel Thomas Polk of North Carolina, wagons carrying the Liberty Bell from Philadelphia to Allentown stopped in Quakertown and stored the infamous bell at the Red Lion Inn.

By the late 1800s, due to the introduction of the Pennsylvania Railroad, the population of Quakertown began to grow, and the community entered a stage of industrialization. Quakertown became home to many industries including cigar and cigar box factories, silk mills and stove foundries.
