Philadelphia, in Greek meaning “The City of Brotherly Love”, is not only America’s 5th most populous city but it is also considered to be one of the most affordable. Typical homes in Philadelphia are historic colonial and Federal-style brick row homes.

Even though Philadelphia is known for its historic homes, in recent years, the city has been inviting well-known architects and real estate moguls to refurbish, renovate and construct new, yet affordable, residential spaces with modern conveniences.

Before being known as Queen Village, this region was a part of “New Sweden”, an area inhabited by the indigenous Lenni Lenapi tribe along with English, Dutch and Swedish settlers.  Because of a land charter granted to William Penn in 1681, New Sweden became a part of Philadelphia, and was renamed “Southwark”, a district in London that William Penn was fond of.

Despite William Penn’s plan of settling the city from east-to-west, many new residents preferred staying close to the Delaware River, and would go no further west than 4th Street.  Quickly, Queen Village became a thriving community, and by 1830, became home to 20,000 Philadelphians.  Because of their proximity to the river, many residents were ship builders and mariners as well as factory workers.  Many also worked as weavers and tailors, who set up shop on 4th Street in Queen Village, known today as “Fabric Row”.

Today, Queen Village is known for its rich heritage and gorgeous row homes, many of which are the original structures from the 18th century.  Residents of this district have easy access to much of Philadelphia’s entertainment and night life including South Street, as well as many popular bars and restaurants in Center City.  Queen Village also has several parks, gardens and other public spaces for residents to enjoy.

Queen Village is within walking distance of Center City Philadelphia, however, there are SEPTA provides several bus routes for visitors’ and residents’ convenience.  The 57 and 25 buses go north and south while the 40 and 64 bus routes travel east and west allowing for access to other parts of the city.
