History

West Chester is a community in Chester County, Pennsylvania located just outside of the City of Philadelphia. It was originally called Turk’s Head after the inn that was located in the center of town. When the town became the seat of the county in 1786 it took the name West Chester and became incorporated in 1799. During the 18th century, West Chester became the center of clockmaking. During the 19th century, companies Hoopes Brothers and Darlington became major contenders in the wheel working industry and became the leading suppliers of wheels for automobiles.

The Community Today

Because it is home to West Chester University along with a number of other schools, West Chester is an iconic college community. It has a small-town charm with an urban atmosphere. It was also voted by the Philadelphia Inquirer as “one of the world’s most perfect small towns”. Architecture in West Chester reflects that of the Greek Revival as well as residential colonial homes. Homebuyers wishing to move to the West Chester area are greeted with affordable housing accommodations and a quaint suburban town with an urban flair.

Transportation

West Chester is serviced by the SEPTA public transportation system. Passengers can take bus routes 92 and 104. West Chester is also serviced by SCCOOT, Chester County’s public bus service. SEPTA and SCCOOT can be accessed by the West Chester Transportation Center.
